ELIXIR Estonia’s July to December 2025 Highlights

In the second half of 2025, ELIXIR Estonia continued to deepen its collaborations in research data management, both within Estonia and across Europe, while also expanding staff involvement in training activities and knowledge-sharing initiatives. Throughout the period, we placed a stronger focus on data management by participating in and organising events in partnership. A standout moment was co-organising a Nordic Computational Biology Week Conference, an experience that will help us take on larger events in the future. Alongside these activities, our team contributed three new publications, reflecting our ongoing commitment to advancing research and supporting the broader scientific community.

Crash Course in Data Management - 19.02.2026

Data management is an essential part of scientific research and is crucial for maximizing the value of data. Crash course in Data Management is an introductory course that equips researchers with the necessary skills for effective organization and management of research data. Participants will gain knowledge of best practices in data documentation, backup, and sharing. We will go through exercises and assignments to reinforce new knowledge.

OpenRefine andmete puhastamiseks - 07.11.2025

Praktiline töötuba, kus puhastame käsitsi sisestatud andmeid OpenRefine tarkvaraga. Esmalt käsitleme tabelarvutuse parimaid tavasid ning seejärel rakendame teadmisi OpenRefine’is. Koolitusel uurime OpenRefine tarkvara funktsionaalsusi: andmete puhastamist suuremate partiidena ja andmete ühtlustamist ühe hoobiga. Lisaks tutvustame võimalust laadida alla täiendavaid andmeid teistest andmebaasidest ja lisarakendusi.

With initiatives in citizen science, data management network, and skill development, the team is contributing to the foundation for a strong, sustainable research data ecosystem in Estonia.

ELIXIR’s student topics for ATI Day 24.09.2025

ELIXIR Estonia is building and maintaining web tools and other resources for life science research. We aim to build things that last and are useful over a longer period. we offer 4 topics:

  • Topic 1: Modernising KEGGanim web application
  • Topic 2: Contrastive Learning for Microscopy Image Understanding (taken)
  • Topic 3: Vision learning to understand how good a basketball player X is in situation Y?
  • Topic 4: Evaluating the Impact of Data Update Frequency on Functional Annotations Across 1000 Species Using g:Profiler data archives

Andmehaldus 101 - 10.10.2025

Andmehaldus 101 on ülevaatlik kursus, mis annab teadlastele praktilised oskused uurimisandmete tõhusaks organiseerimiseks ja haldamiseks. Kursusel käsitleme parimaid praktikaid failide nimetamisel, kaustastruktuuri loomisel, andmete varundamisel ja jagamisel. Suur rõhk on metaandmetel ning README-faili koostamisel – õpime, mida metaandmed tegelikult hõlmavad, miks need on teadustöö jätkusuutlikkuse seisukohalt hädavajalikud ning kuidas neid kasutada. Õpitut kinnistame praktiliste harjutuste ja ülesannete abil.
