ELIXIR Estonia’s January to June 2025 Highlights

The first half of 2025 has shown how ELIXIR Estonia combines international collaboration, national community-building, and innovative training to support researchers. With initiatives in citizen science, data management network, and skill development, the team is contributing to the foundation for a strong, sustainable research data ecosystem in Estonia.

ELIXIR Estonia hosted the ELIXIR ELITMa module 2 and Interoperability Platform meeting in Tartu

ELIXIR ELITMa workshop

In May, the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science and ELIXIR Estonia had the pleasure of hosting a productive ELIXIR Week, featuring both the ELITMa and a co-located Interoperability Platform workshop. From May 19th to 22nd, data management experts and colleagues from 11 ELIXIR Nodes across Europe gathered at the Institute of Computer Science to focus on key research data management and interoperability areas.

ELIXIR Estonia Contributes to the University of Tartu Data Management and Open Science Network

On May 14th, the University of Tartu’s Data Management and Open Science competence network held its second training session, organised by the University of Tartu Library. ELIXIR Estonia was proud to contribute to this initiative that supports the advancement of data management and open science across the university.

BY-COVID project wrap-up and success stories

The BeYond-COVID (BY-COVID) project aimed to provide extensive open data on SARS-CoV-2 and other infectious diseases, emphasizing the mobilization of raw viral sequences to monitor the spread of variants. To ensure global collaboration, it enabled federated data analysis, managed metadata, and facilitated long-term cataloguing. Success stories can be read here, on page 16 is project lead by University of Tartu: Infectious Diseases Toolkit.

ELIXIR Estonia participated in UniTartuCS Day

The UniTartuCS Day, held annually in September, offers students a unique opportunity to connect with researchers and lecturers, explore thesis topics, and establish ties with research groups. ELIXIR Estonia participated in the event with a poster presentation, and our Head of Node, Hedi Peterson, proposed four possible thesis topics applicable to both Bachelor’s and Master’s students. For more information, we encourage you to reach out to us.

Unix Shell Basics training course

Advanced computing power is hidden away in clouds/cluster/supercomputers that you do not have click and point access. As a general rule these high performance computer resources use Linux operating systems and are accessible only by a shell terminal.

This course is aimed to provide basic survival skills in Linux and terminal environment. We will teach you how to access files and folders, move around and hopefully shake off the fear of getting stuck somewhere along the way.

Mini workshop about data management 13th December 2018

Most researchers know that data management is an important part of their work and is essential for getting the most out of your data. But what exactly is data management and what can you do to ensure that you’re managing your data well?

In this mini workshop you will learn what to consider when managing life science data and gain hints and tips for submitting your data to a public resource.

Dr. Melissa Burke and Dr. Sarah Morgan from EMBL-EBI training team (see more about them) will share best practicies, trips and tricks about managing your scientific data.

Registration and participation is free of charge. Up to 20 participants can take part. Please register here.

The workshop will take place at Ülikooli 17 (Paabel) on 13th of December at 9:30–12:30.
