We are proud to share a recent publication by our team member, Marilin Moor, who contributed to a study on advanced wound care. Published in Materials Today Bio, the article titled “Living probiotics-loaded wound matrices prepared by microchip electrospinning” introduces a novel method for treating skin infections.
“An Intuitive Primer on Effective Functional Genomics Study Design” by Yoav Gilad provides a clear and accessible guide to the principles of effective functional genomics study design. Instead of prescribing fixed protocols, it encourages readers to think critically about their choices. For students, teachers, and researchers entering the field, it is an insightful and practical resource that I highly recommend.
The first half of 2025 has shown how ELIXIR Estonia combines international collaboration, national community-building, and innovative training to support researchers. With initiatives in citizen science, data management network, and skill development, the team is contributing to the foundation for a strong, sustainable research data ecosystem in Estonia.
This summer, Marilin Moor, Product Manager of ELIXIR Estonia and now a PhD student at the University of Tartu, published a new article presenting FiBar, a tool for analysing fiber diameters in complex drug delivery systems. The research was carried out in collaboration with the Institute of Pharmacy (Laura Männaste, Marta Putrinš and Professor Karin Kogermann) and Dmytro Fishman, Associate Professor in Artificial Intelligence at the Institute of Computer Science, University of Tartu.
ELIXIR Estonia is proud to showcase the Research Data Management Kit (RDMkit), a community-led knowledge resource for life sciences that helps researchers and data stewards navigate the complexities of managing research data. Developed through the ELIXIR CONVERGE project and supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, the RDMkit provides guidance on Research Data management that aligns with FAIR principles, ensuring data is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.
What happens when you forget to back up your research data? Or when a tiny mistake in Excel changes your results completely? This autumn, ELIXIR Estonia is taking a playful, but serious look at what can go wrong in data management.

In May, the University of Tartu Institute of Computer Science and ELIXIR Estonia had the pleasure of hosting a productive ELIXIR Week, featuring both the ELITMa and a co-located Interoperability Platform workshop. From May 19th to 22nd, data management experts and colleagues from 11 ELIXIR Nodes across Europe gathered at the Institute of Computer Science to focus on key research data management and interoperability areas.
The newly launched AlphaGenome model by Google DeepMind highlights how open, free, and high-quality datasets enable cutting-edge scientific advancements. Built using publicly available data, AlphaGenome demonstrates what becomes possible when researchers have access to reliable and reusable resources.
On May 14th, the University of Tartu’s Data Management and Open Science competence network held its second training session, organised by the University of Tartu Library. ELIXIR Estonia was proud to contribute to this initiative that supports the advancement of data management and open science across the university.
